Given there are 17,179,869,184 cells in an Excel spreadsheet, the ₤12B the UK government paid for Test and Trace comes out to just £0.70 per cell.

    What a bargain!

Now I know what you’re thinking: “But, they’re not going to fill all the cells now are they? And they ran out of rows.” OK, wiseass, so there are 1,048,576 rows and that would mean £11,444 per row.

Also, what are you, a communist?

@aral Adding one to the "Don't use Excel for scientific data" column. I think we're at -130,342,245,303 now.

      Wait...

@aral While I do believe this sort of stupidity is what happened, I'm finding it hard to verify that it definitely was an Excel error. The only places I can see that mention Excel are Mirror & Daily Mail which aren't exactly bastions of the truth.

However, the BBC states:> It was caused by some data files reporting positive test results exceeding the maximum file size.

Which sounds like the sort of BS phrasing that would be used to cover the Excel stupidity

Also, thanks for the fun maths! 😊
